Click here for more information about the program’s history at 2b.

RBC Emerging Artists grants are awarded to organizations focused on supporting emerging artists by providing a platform to showcase their talent, in order to be recognized at a national and international level. Click here for more information on the Emerging Artists grant program at RBC.

Position Requirements:

New this year, the RBC Emerging Artist Residency will be a two-year term. This will deepen the impact of the residency, allowing the artist to form a stronger connection with the 2b team, and giving them a more in-depth engagement with 2b’s operations. It will also provide the successful applicant with a longer, more rigorous creation process as part of their residency.
The residency is set to begin in early January 2023 and conclude in December 2024, however the exact start and end dates can be modified to accommodate the successful candidate’s commitments. The residency will be flexible to accommodate the needs and interests of the candidate as well as the realities of today’s mid-pandemic working world.

The Emerging Artist-in-Residence may focus on any aspect of theatre practice. We welcome applications from writers, directors, performers, designers, and production personnel/ technicians. Please feel free to reach out to our Administration and Outreach Manager Chelsea Dickie if you’d like to chat about your application or have any questions on the program.

For this year’s program we will only be accepting applications from artists with lived experience as members of an equity-owed community. This is based on a desire to respond to the historic exclusion and the barriers faced by equity-owed groups including those from the Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIAS2+ and Disability communities.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their own schedule alongside 2b’s artistic leadership (Christian Barry and Jacob Sampson), and the exact projects and program of work will be shaped by the interests of the successful candidate. This is a part-time contract position, but our team will support the successful candidate in submitting additional funding applications, if they choose to do so.

2b theatre company is a work in progress. We acknowledge that we work in an industry which continues to rely upon ableist and historically white supremacist working models. We are trying to be better. We are committed to building safe working environments for our community that support artists in bringing their full selves to the work.

This residency is tailored to Emerging Professional Artists. Successful candidates will have either completed their first phase of formal training, or will have practiced in their theatrical discipline semi-professionally for at least two years. They must have less than five years professional experience in theatre.

There is no age cap for the program, and we’re happy to accept applications from artists at any age. An “Emerging Artist” as defined by the RBC program may be someone who:

  • Is in the early stages of their career in their chosen artistic discipline
  • Is the creator of a new work(s) or a practitioner of an art form
  • Demonstrates a commitment to devoting more time to their artistic activity
  • Is involved in their creative community
  • Has not yet been showcased outside their primary country of residence
  • Makes a financial commitment to their practice
  • Hopes to seek their primary income from their artistic work
  • Has little to no presentation, exhibition or publication history

To Apply:

Please send a current resume, and an expression of interest to applications@2btheatre.com with “Emerging Artist in Residence” in the subject line.

This “expression of interest” can take any form you like (a letter, video, audio recording, etc). It should explain why you would like to work with 2b, in what capacity you would like to be involved with our upcoming projects, and a bit of information about how you think 2b could support the work you are making. You are also welcome to submit a sample of your past work, if you feel it would be useful.

Deadline: Midnight on Monday November 21, 2022

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Administration and Outreach Manager Chelsea Dickie at chelsea@2btheatre.com with any questions or assistance with your application!
