Program Background:

2b has hosted an RBC Emerging Artist-in-Residence for the past fifteen seasons. Through this program, artists are invited to observe and participate in 2b’s creation processes, and are offered formal mentorship on their own creative projects. Click here for more information about the program’s history at 2b. We are now expanding the program to the RBC Sets the Stage artist residency program.

The RBC Community Investment grants are awarded to organizations focused on supporting people building skills to be better equipped for a thriving future. Click here for more information.

Position Requirements:

New this year, the 2b and RBC are expanding the definition of “emerging” beyond early-career artists to include artists who are in the process of emerging or re-emerging into any new stage of their career, whatever that stage may be. The RBC Sets the Stage resident artist can be any age, at any stage of their career.

The residency is set to begin in early January 2026 and conclude in December 2027; however, the exact start and end dates can be modified to accommodate the successful candidate’s commitments. The residency will be flexible to accommodate the needs and interests of the candidate.

The RBC Sets the Stage Artist-in-Residence may focus on any aspect of theatre practice. We welcome applications from writers, directors, performers, designers, and production personnel/ technicians. Please feel free to reach out to our associate artistic director Jacob Sampson if you’d like to chat about your application or have any questions on the program.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their own schedule alongside 2b’s artistic leadership (Christian Barry and Jacob Sampson), and the exact projects and program of work will be shaped by the interests of the successful candidate. This is a part-time contract position, but our team will support the successful candidate in submitting additional funding applications, if they choose to do so.

This residency is tailored to Emerging and/or Established Professional Artists. Successful candidates will have either completed their first phase of formal training, or will have practiced in their theatrical discipline semi-professionally for at least two years; however, there is no maximum to the amount of their years of professional experience in theatre.

There is no age cap for the program, we’re happy to accept applications from artists at any age. Tell us about yourself and how we can help to set the stage for the next phase of your art practice.

To Apply:

Please send a current resume, and an expression of interest to applications@2btheatre.com with “Set the Stage Residence” in the subject line.

This “expression of interest” can take any form you like (a letter, video, audio recording, etc). It should explain why you would like to work with 2b, in what capacity you would like to be involved with our upcoming projects, and a bit of information about how you think 2b could support the work you are making. You are also welcome to submit a sample of your past work, if you feel it would be useful.

Deadline: Midnight on Monday December 12th, 2025

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our associate artistic director Jacob Sampson at jacob@2btheatre.com with any questions or assistance with your application!
