Halifax Presents: 2b Theatre celebrates 25 years with one-night musical tribute

“Music is the most direct road to the heart,” says 2b artistic director Christian Barry in a media release. “2b prides ourselves on making shows that grapple with big ideas, but connecting with the human heart comes before everything else. That’s why music is such a big part of what we do.”

Christian Barry met fellow 2b co-founder Anthony Black when they were both working at Neptune Theatre School in the summer before they were both graduating from University. They were both also teaching a precocious thirteen year old girl that summer who would grow up to be a theatre critic. “There was a teachers’ party to get to know each other,” Barry says, “and [Anthony] and I met there and quickly got into a deep discussion, which became an argument, about lighting design. We kind of lovingly say our relationship kicked off with an argument and we’ve been arguing lovingly ever since.”

Barry co-founded Bunnies in the Headlights Theatre with several friends in 1999. He said the name referred to being open and honest under the theatre lights, but they ultimately rebranded to 2b theatre. “Who was going to let us direct anything? The theatre scene in Halifax felt particularly hard to break into at the time,” Barry said. “It didn’t seem like anyone would give the keys of the car to a 19-year-old. We wanted to make our own work.”
